"I don't think Astroturf should be used in a competition like this", says Redknapp

After his side lost to Young Boys 3-2 Redknapp questioned the use of Astroturf in the tournaments like Champions League. Tottenham seemed unprepared and were down 3-0 within first 28 minutes of the games. Despite the comments that the pitch will not be a problem and the result will not be dependent on the pitch.

Spurs boss made several changes before the start of the game which showed that the pitch is in fact playing more important part than previously thought of.

“I played on Astroturf and hated every minute of it. We had it at QPR but we don’t have it any more in England and personally I don’t agree with it and I don’t think Astroturf should be used in a competition like this.”

Goals by Senad Lulic, Henri Bienvenu and Xavier Hochstrasser seemed to have turned Tottenham’s Champions League dream into a nightmare on the slick surface, approved by FIFA for the Stade de Suisse in 2006.

Redknapp commented that he had a feeling about this happening when we were training yesterday.  The players looked unhappy and uncomfortable on the pitch.

“I had to change four player because I didn’t want to risk them on this pitch. Aaron Lennon, Robbie Keane, and Tom Huddlestone. They were very uncomfortable. When Tom was last on this kind of pitch he was out for six weeks”, said Redknapp.

Something positive out of this match,

“At 3-0 we were out of it,” he told Sky Sports. “We were in desperate trouble, so full credit to the lads, we’ve come back.

“Now we need to win at home and it gives us a great chance.”
