Portugal: Carlos Queiroz sacked

Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz has been sacked with immediate effect.

The 57-year-old was suspended for six months for disrupting a anti-doping test. Queiroz was also under fire because of Portugal’s poor performance at 2010 World Cup finals. Portugal continued their bad form in Euro 2012 qualifiers.

“Carlos Queiroz’s contract is settled with immediate effect,” said the Portuguese Football Federation (PFF).

“We have told him about our decision first hand, and the reasons for this decision will be communicated to him.”

He had two years left on his contract. His lawyer Rui Patricio commented,”It is unfortunate but we will fight it.”

“We are not satisfied with the fact that Queiroz’s rights are not being respected,” stated Patricio.

“We have to look into the cause of termination. If something is not just and signs of government interference are there. Then, my client should be compensated and we will surely alert Fifa.”

Queiroz was suspended for one month for misconduct in August after he was found to have insulted an anti-doping team and upset their work.

The ban, which related to a test performed in May, was later extended to six months.

Queiroz has denied wrongdoing. None of the players tested positive.
