Tottenham: Defoe out for at least six weeks

Jermain Defoe is out for six weeks due to an ankle injury he suffered in Tuesday’s match against Switzerland.

The 27-year-old was carried off the field.

“Even if it’s a bad sprain, he will be out for about six weeks or so because it’s a nasty one,” said Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp.

Defoe is likely to miss Tottenham’s Champions League games and England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro. The England star was in good form. He scored a hat-trick in England’s 4-0 victory against Bulgaria. Tottenham will also miss him as Harry  Redknapp’s side is struggling with injuries with Michael Dawson already out after he suffered knee injury.

Defoe was seen wearing protective boot on his right foot and using crutches at Spurs’ training ground on THursday.

Defoe was supposed to undergo a groin surgery at the end of August but it was postponed by the club as Defoe declared himself fit.

Their decision seemed right as Defoe was performing well for his club as well as for England. But this injury means that he could be out till October. Tottenham is now without Defoe for their Champion League game against Werder Bremen and England will be without him in their game against Montenegro. Capello will be looking for his replacement. English side which is already struggling with injuries, this is another blow for them.
